About This Course
Medical Sociology examines how social, cultural, economic, and environmental factors influence health, illness, healthcare experiences, and patterns of disease within populations. The course introduces nursing students to the relationship between society and health, including health beliefs, family and community influences, social inequalities, culture, gender, socioeconomic status, and healthcare institutions. Students will explore how these factors shape health behaviours, access to care, treatment decisions, and patient outcomes. Understanding the social context of health enables nurses to appreciate patients’ experiences beyond their clinical conditions and provide culturally responsive, equitable, and person-centred care.
