About This Course

Ethical practice is fundamental to safe, compassionate and professional healthcare delivery. Every interaction between a healthcare professional and a patient involves responsibilities that extend beyond clinical knowledge and technical competence. Healthcare workers must respect patient rights, protect confidential information, obtain valid informed consent, maintain professional boundaries and make decisions that uphold human dignity, patient safety and professional integrity. In today's increasingly complex healthcare environment, clinical staff frequently encounter situations requiring sound ethical judgement. These may involve patients refusing treatment, requests for confidential medical information, concerns about abuse or neglect, conflicts between professional responsibilities and patient preferences, or the inappropriate use of digital communication platforms. Managing these situations appropriately requires an understanding of ethical principles, applicable laws, professional standards and institutional policies. Ethics, Patient Rights and Confidentiality in Clinical Practice is designed to equip nurses, doctors, midwives, allied health professionals and other clinical staff with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to navigate these responsibilities confidently and professionally. The course explores the fundamental principles of healthcare ethics, patient autonomy, informed consent, dignity, confidentiality, safeguarding, professional boundaries and responsible information handling. Particular attention is given to the Nigerian healthcare environment, incorporating relevant national legislation, professional regulatory standards and internationally recognised ethical principles. Through realistic clinical scenarios, case studies, interactive learning activities and ethical decision-making exercises, participants will learn to recognise ethical challenges, evaluate competing responsibilities, make defensible professional decisions and respond appropriately to situations that may compromise patient rights or safety. By the end of this course, learners will be better prepared to integrate ethical principles into everyday clinical practice, protect patients' rights and confidential information, recognise safeguarding concerns, maintain appropriate professional relationships and demonstrate accountability in their professional conduct. Ultimately, ethical healthcare is not simply about following rules—it is about consistently making decisions that protect patients, preserve trust and uphold the dignity of every person receiving care.
